भारत के समुद्र मार्ग की खोज के बाद पुर्तगाली एक्सप्लोरर, वास्को द गामा, कालीकट (अब कोझिकोड) तक 1498 में पहुंच गया।
सैन फ्रैंसिस्को के बिजनेसमैन लेवी स्ट्रॉस और दर्जी जेकब डेविस को 1873 में इसी दिन दुनिया की पहली जीन्स बनाने का पेटंट दिया गया।
